Okay, I just put the stock helmet lock on my ride, but I'm a bit lost. Can anyone give me the lowdown on how the thing is supposed to actually lock?

@mapitmadman just want you to know that those stock helmet locks are okay for quick stops, but they're not a replacement for a serious lock.
Anyone with a pair of scissors can snip the helmet strap and steal it. If you want more security, a lot of people use a small, plastic coated helmet extension cable.
You run the cable through the full face of the helmet, put the loop on the bike's lock, and then you've got a much more secure setup
